How to Delete or Close a Hotmail Account

This article shows you how to delete or close a Hotmail account. If you use this account with any Microsoft service or Xbox, you won't be able to use it to sign in to those products or services. Be considerate and aware of all consequences before making the decision to closing your account.

How to delete or close a Hotmail account

Step 1: Go to Account closure page.

Step 2: Enter the email address of the account that you want to close or delete and click Next.

Step 3: Enter your password and click Sign in.

Step 4: Select how you want to verify your identity (via Email or SMS).

If you choose Email "alternative your email address", you will need to enter your full email address and click Send code. An email containing a security code will be sent to your email. Check your email, enter the code into the blank box, and click Verify.

If you choose to verify your account via SMS, you will need to enter the last 4 digits of your phone number and click Send code. Microsoft will send a verification code to your phone number. Enter the code you received into the blank box and click Verify.

Step 5: Microsoft will inform you about things that you should do before you close your account. Scroll down and click Next.

Step 6: Review the list and select all the checkboxes to acknowledge that you've read and accepted each term of closure.

Step 7: Click Select a reason. It's near the bottom of the page.

Step 8: Choose the reason why you want to close your account from the drop-down list.

Step 9: Click Mark account for closure.

What will happen if you close your Outlook.com or Hotmail account?

• You’ll lose all of your emails and contacts.
• You’ll lose all of the entries made in your calendar.
• You’ll lose everything you may have placed in OneDrive.
• You’ll lose access to Office 365 if you have it.
• You’ll lose access to your XBox Live account if it uses this Microsoft account’s email address.
• You’ll lose your ability to log in to Skype with this account.
• You'll lose access to Microsoft services.

When you click Mark account for closure, your account will be permanently closed after 60 days. If you change your mind, just sign in again within that 60 days.
