Google Maps
Google Maps, launched in February 2005, is a web mapping service developed by Google. It offers satellite imageries, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets (Street View), real-time traffic conditions (Google Traffic), and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle, or public transportation.
Google Maps offers an API that allows maps to be embedded on third-party websites and offers users the ability to collaboratively expand and update the service's mapping worldwide with Google Map Maker. Most of the high-resolution imageries of the cities are aerial photography taken from aircraft, while those of non-urban areas are from satellites. Most imageries are no more than 3 years old and updated on a regular basis.
Features
- Directions
Google Maps provides a route planner with Get Directions. Depending on the areas, up to 4 mode of transportation are available. In combination with Google Traffic and Google Street View, issues such as parking, turning lanes, and one-way streets can be reviewed before traveling. Users can also track traffic conditions in real time to find the best route possible to reach their destination.
- Places
Google Maps can help you find places to hang out with friends, or plan ahead where to stay and where to eat before a trip. If you need help deciding between places, there is a review system with photos to get you informed.
- Tour the world and beyond
Google Maps is not just a map, it can be used to visit various attraction sights on earth, from the highest mountain to the lowest valley and anywhere else. With Satellite and Street View you can be in any city in the world, discover where you've always wanted to go, revisit the places you've already been and beyond. Take a look at the Moons and Mars, no spaceship required.
