How to Find Your IP Address

An IP address is a number that is unique to each device that is connected to the internet. IP, which stands for "Internet Protocol," is a set of rules that tells people how to share information on the internet. An IP address tells the computer how and where to send the information. If the IP address is like a physical mailing address, then IP is the part that tells you how to get there.
Every device has two IP addresses: a public or external address that lets it talk to the rest of the internet, and a private or internal address that lets it talk to your local network, also known as your personal internet router.
You might need to know your IP address to set up a file server, add a printer, or talk to other devices on the same network. Since your IP address shows where you are, it can also help you figure out how your personal information is shared. Here's how to find your IP address on Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone.
